Event Description

The Level I CBT course is focused on teaching the essentials of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) through a series of weekly experiential training sessions.  Participants will learn to use the CBT model to conceptualise client problems, individualize and develop collaborative treatment plans, and to use cognitive re-appraisal, behavioural experiments and exposure-based treatment. This training seminar is offered as a series of six weekly sessions and includes experientially-based exercises aimed at reinforcing and practicing core therapy skills. Each session lasts 3 hours.

  • Theoretical fundamentals and principles of CBT
  • Collaboratively conceptualize client problems
  • Core CBT skills for mood and anxiety problems

Sept. 20

Overview of the Main Structure and Components of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Review of the Cognitive Therapy Rating Scale. Agenda setting, the development of goals and consideration of process-related variables.

Sept. 27

Introduction to the CBT Model:  Review of disorder-specific models for CBT treatment and core treatment targets across problem areas. Collaborative case conceptualization of client problems using the CBT model. Development of targeted and individualized treatment plans. Using psycho-education to help prepare clients for treatment.

Oct. 4

Behavioural Activation:  Introduction to the rationale and principles of behavioural activation.  Description of steps to monitor, review and schedule activation exercises focused on enhancing mastery and pleasure.  Linking activation to identified therapy goals.

Oct. 11

Cognitive Restructuring:  Introduction to the rationale and principles of cognitive restructuring and the importance of meta-cognitive thinking. Common cognitive themes in mood and anxiety problems and the use of cognitive reappraisal.  

Oct. 18

Behavioural Experiments:  Developing, describing and using experiments to test out negative predictions and gain evidence for more helpful beliefs. Review of behavioural experiments across typical cognitive themes found in mood and anxiety problems.

Oct. 25

Introduction to Exposure-Based Treatment:  Principles of exposure-based treatment and the development of fear hierarchies. Guidelines for implementation. 

 

Schedule and Teaching 

The 6-session Essentials in CBT Course is taught through a series of didactic and experiential exercises.  In each session a new skill is introduced, the skill is modelled and/or practiced in session and homework is assigned for the week in order to gain experience using this new skill.

 

Pre-Requisites/Target Audience

Given that one of the purposes of CBT is to address and treat clinical and subclinical mental health conditions, ***only health professionals, including but not only limited to, psychologists, psychiatrists, family physicians, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists and professionally qualified psychotherapists who are seeking practical, proven methods to enhance their therapeutic skills may apply.***

 

Certificates of Attendance  

Certificates of Attendance are issued to participants who attend a minimum of 4 of the 6 sessions.

 

Continuing Education Credits

This course has been approved for 18 CEC hours by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).

Cancellation &
Refund Policy

Payment must be received no later than 5 business days after registration.  Refunds will be given up to one month prior to the start of the group training session (minus a $50.00 adminsitration fee). After this time, no refunds will be provided for cancellations.  Missed sessions will not be refunded.
